Group 'update'!

15 November 2013

We welcome to our group Dr. Shi Chen, who is joining us for two years as a post-doc visiting scientist from his parent Institute of Fluid Physics (IFP), China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP). At the same time we thank Dr. Bruno Paroli  for the great contribution he gave to our group during the past years, his friendship and the good time we spent together. Dr. Paroli is beginning a new research endeavour within our department's Optics Research Laboratory, yet we plan to collaborate with him and his new group in various capacities. We'll see you around, Bruno!

Workshop of the Physics of Complex Systems Group, 11 September 2013

3 September 2013

We are approaching a fairly dense mid-September! In addition to the FisMat2013 conference, our group will not miss the occasion of showing up at the first Workshop of the Physics of Complex Systems Group, a newborn network established within our department to connect researchers dealing with a range of topics that share the rather broad concept of "complexity". Giancarlo Maero will give the talk "Confinement and dynamics of non-neutral and complex plasmas: theory and experiments". The participation is free and students are welcome.

Nobel Prize 2012 awarded to David Wineland

9 October 2012

We sincerely congratulate with David Wineland, who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics (together with Serge Haroche), motivated by his "ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems" through the use of ion traps. This exciting announcement represents a confirmation of the importance of particle trapping studies and a further source of motivation in carrying out basic research of this kind.

PRIN 2009 project approved - ready to start up!

1 September 2011

We come back from the summer (quasi-)break with excellent news. Our project proposal 'Nonlinear dynamics of non-neutral complex plasmas', submitted to the Ministry of Educations, Universities and Research two-year project call 'PRIN 2009', has been approved. As for the PRIN 2007 project, once again the proposal had been submitted last year by our group jointly with a group from the University of Calabria. Massimiliano Romé will be the National Scientific Coordinator and Coordinator for the Research Unit here at the University of Milano. Dr. Fabio Lepreti will lead the Research Unit at the University of Calabria.

The project will officially start on 15 October 2011 and foresees numerical investigations on a dust-contaminated electron plasma in a Malmberg-Penning trap as well as the construction of part of the set-up to create and confine such a complex plasma. This is for us both a continuation and expansion of our work in trapped plasmas as well as a new research topic - deemed as a 'hitherto unexplored area of research' by the evaluation committee. Definitely a challenge, yet a great opportunity and source of excitement.

Promo shoot in our lab

17 May 2011

Today the guys from CTU (the multimedia service center of the University of Milano) came to our lab to shoot a promo for the university digital library. Prof. Francesco Ragusa, our department head, was interviewed about the importance of the digital library while having the ELTRAP set-up as a background. As users of this service we were pleased to help. And we were also pleased that the choice fell on our lab - it looks like it is the most telegenic around here!
